......................................... Received: 03-07-14 Accepted: 02-02-15 Abstract The introduction of high-resolution esophageal manometry allowed physicians to identify both previously unidentified normal esophageal functions and patterns and various abnormalities. The creation of new charts of pressure patterns and the topography of esophageal pressure has led to the development of new tools for analysis and classification of esophageal motor disorders. At present, the Chicago classification is the diagnostic method of analysis used for various esophageal motor disorders. In Colombia, we see the use of high-resolution esophageal manometry growing on a daily basis. In this article we review how to perform and interpret high-resolution esophageal manometry.

Relationship between esophageal clinical symptoms and manometry findings in patients with esophageal motility disorders: a cross-sectional study
Background: Manometry is the gold-standard diagnostic test for motility disorders in the esophagus. The development of high-resolution manometry catheters and software displays of manometry recordings in color-coded pressure plots have changed the diagnostic assessment of esophageal disease. The diagnostic value of particular esophageal clinical symptoms among patients suspected of esophageal m...
متن کاملHow to Perform and Interpret Upper Esophageal Sphincter Manometry
Manometry of the pharynx and the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) provides important information on the swallowing mechanism, especially about details on the pharyngeal contraction and relaxation of the UES. However, UES manometry is challenging because of the radial asymmetry of the sphincter, and upward movement of the UES during swallowing. In addition, the rapidity of contraction of the pha...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW High-resolution manometry (HRM) is increasingly performed worldwide, to study esophageal motility. The Chicago classification is subsequently applied to interpret the manometric findings and facilitate a diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders. This review will discuss new insights regarding the diagnosis and management using the Chicago classification. RECENT FINDINGS Re...
متن کاملImpact of high-resolution manometry on achalasia diagnosis and treatment
Achalasia is a primary neurodegenerative disorder of the esophagus characterized by loss of function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and of esophageal peristalsis, which causes symptoms such as dysphagia, regurgitation, weight loss, and chest pain. Esophageal manometry is the gold standard for the diagnosis of achalasia. The typical manometric features are incomplete relaxation of a fre...
